It's difficult to review a book like this. The writing is very simple, sometimes repetitive. There is little to no insight into why a loving mother suddenly turns against one of her own children in the vilest way imaginable. But then again - this is not a novel, it's the true tale of a boy who survived the worst odds a child can possibly be dealt, so can we really expect more than what we're given here, which is a honest, detailed account of a traumatic childhood? This book was recommended to me because I'm interested in the psychology of child abuse. I almost stopped reading a couple of times because the things that happened to David were beyond horrible. Torture is the only word that comes even close to covering it. On the one hand, I felt like a voyeur for reading this book, on the other, I felt that David's voice deserved to be heard.

This is a true story book about the author, David, who was severely abused as a child from about age 6 to age 11. It tells the story of a child that spent most days starving, living in a cold basement, working chores until he couldn't stand, and not even being called by his name. This became the 3rd worst case of child abuse in CA history.I had a hard time with this book. I was so angry reading it. I could not even imagine how this could go on for 5 years and he couldn't get away. He was in public school. He was forced to wear basically the same outfit everyday. He stole food. He was covered with bruises. His mother burned him and stabbed him. And yet, it took 5 years for him to be rescued. The "happy ending" is - David Pelzer is a full functioning adult with a family and children. He has spoken all over the country about the abuse and promoting reporting child abuse. But this book. I just could not get over how awful it was. I have been extra kind to my own kiddos because I would never want them to feel anything but love from me. He didn't deserve what happened to him. No kid deserves that.

And thank him for recording this incredible story. It is a hard book to read - in that the stories he tells are nightmarish and outright horrible. Yet I read the book clear through in a few hours. I had to find out what happened to this dear little boy.And then I *RAN* to the library to get the sequel and then I went back to get the third book in the series.A previous post is right - you'll never look at a child in tatters the same way. And to me - that is one of this book's big messages. Several people failed Dave as a child. How many people in school and in his neighborhood saw this sad little boy but lacked the moral courage to help him out?How many times have I seen a child like that, and went merrily on my way? Hard questions, but thank goodness for Dave's strength and willingness to bring these questions to our thought and our collective consciousness. This book is a clarion call that we are all responsible for the children in our circle or village. I think we will all be held accountable for looking the other way when we discovered a child in need.A powerful book. I highly recommend it - but be forewarned, the descriptions are graphic. And a last note - I am so grateful to hear Dave has been healed of this dreadful past. I hope his story will be a shining light to show others - full healing and restoration is possible.
